Directing the CSC (Canadian Society of Cinematographers) Insight Series (interviews)
Interviews don't have to be static or predictable. For the CSC Insight Series, we wanted to create a visual environment as deep as the conversations themselves. As both the director and cinematographer on this project along with the great Jeremy Benning ASC CSC, my goal was to step away from the traditional "office background" and utilize a Virtual Production setup to craft a high-end, cinematic look.
Filming in an LED volume allowed us to place our experts in immersive, industrial environments that we could tweak in real-time. This level of control is a game-changer for Toronto cinematographer workflows—it means no distractions, perfect lighting consistency, and the ability to focus entirely on the performance and the story being told.
Directing these sessions was a privilege, as the series is dedicated to sharing filmmaking expertise with the next generation. It’s a perfect example of how combining practical directing with cutting-edge tech can elevate a standard interview into a piece of masterclass content.
